Shanta Williams

Shanta Williams

Nov 5, 2012

Dear Shanta,

Trina Losinno, SPIN’s founding Executive Director implored us as SPIN employees to “Bring the Party Everyday”.  Every time I share this important bit of wisdom, I can’t help but see the smile and light within myself and others. Who doesn’t want to attend and share in all that a party entails and provides for one another?  And no doubt, you know how to party!

Shanta, I remember meeting you for the first time when you were a Direct Support Professional in SPIN’s Residential services.  Your person centered approaches were evident but your creativity was hidden. Fortunately, an opportunity became available at the Norcom Community Center and your ability to bring the party was immediately witnessed as you have been spreading cheer ever since you entered the NCC with your vibrant, enthusiastic, and positive personality.  A “Right Fit” was born!

On any given day, your “whatever it takes” attitude enables you  to go above and beyond in order to support people to reach their personal outcomes. You stretch yourself and choose to involve yourself in all activities at the NCC.  Your creative interests often invite you to volunteer to help with parties and special events.  The Children Theatre productions, evening dances and annual Talent Show are just a few of the events that you offer your talent and strength set.  In fact, you brought the house down in your rendition of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz as well as for Chris and Jason who you supported in their roles as the Tin Man and the Wizard.

Shanta, one of your many strengths is your ability to develop and build the self esteem and confidence of others.  You never miss the opportunity to compliment someone on their new outfit or hairstyle. You don’t forget to let them know you missed them when they were not here or remember an important event in their life. We all have the privilege of witnessing this Person First Pillar through your everyday actions.  However, I think that one of the greatest complements of the demonstration of SPIN’s Pillars is a family member requesting the specific support of a Direct Support Professional for their loved one.  This shout out happens often regarding your caring, dedicated support.

In fact here are just a few:

Gloria McKenna states that “it means the world to have someone who Erica Jean loves so dearly to support her. We have had many caretakers through the years but Shanta has that “special something” that I find is rare. She truly loves and enjoys interacting and spending time with all of the participants at the NCC.  Shanta’s actions are so natural and nurturing and that’s why I trust her completely.”

Randee Blank believes that “Shanta is the most caring, generous and positive person.  She supports Jason to grow in so many ways.  Shanta has a beautiful spirit and she brings the best out of Jason!”

Rita Lepore says that “we love Shanta and I know that Chris is receiving the best support possible from Shanta.  She ensures that Chris is included and active in all activities. It took some trial and error to find the right fir person to support Chris and I am so thankful that we found Shanta!”

Shanta, there is no doubt that you are a “shining star” and an exemplary Direct Support Professional.  On behalf of the SPIN Corporate Board, SPIN Managers, your colleagues, your NCC fans and their families, we are so very proud of you and congratulate you on this most deserving Employee of the Month Award for October, 2012.  And most importantly, thank you for bringing the party everyday!

With appreciation and congratulations,
Judith R. Dotzman
Executive Director
