On Sunday, September 30, 2012, over 400 people came out to Bensalem Rambler’s Field for SPIN’s 2nd Annual Softball Tournament to enjoy a great sports competition while raising awareness and funds for children and adults with intellectual, developmental, and autism spectrum disabilities. The tournament opened with the presentation of colors by the Navy Color Guard and the singing of the National Anthem by the acclaimed SPIN Choir. Dan O’Neil, a young man who receives SPIN services, accompanied by his mother and SPIN Board Member, Andrea Temple, and her husband, Dr. Geoffrey Temple threw out the ceremonial first pitch.  From there, 24 teams spilled on to the fields to compete for the coveted title of SPIN Softball Tournament Champion.

The day was full of nail biting competition, old rivalries, and good-humored fun, as well as a packed snack stand.  The Gourmet Vendor prepared delicious hotdogs and folks enjoyed food and drinks compliments of Wawa, Pepsi, Shop Rite and Giant, Whole Foods, Shop Rite and Academy Injury and Health.  Many thanks also goes out to The Sports Authority for donating equipment and The Bensalem Ramblers for generously lending their fields as well as their diligent volunteer umpires and 12 year-old baseball team who managed the games seamlessly.  SPIN is appreciative of all the sponsors who helped make the softball tournament a success.

The event raised over $16,000 for a life of possibilities for children and adults with disabilities that SPIN serves. There could not have been such a success without the help of all the incredible teams and their “fun’raising” efforts including a jeans day at work.  “It was an amazing day. Everybody had fun, played hard, laughed harder and did something wonderful and special for other people.  We all won,” stated Carla Higgins, tournament committee partner.  At the end, however, it came down to Kate Soda’s Fire Breathing Pink Flamingos and Lou Citro’s City Sluggers. Both teams put up a fight, but in the end the City Sluggers came away with their 2nd SPIN Softball Tournament victory.
